In Australia the local aborigines had their own version of the Atlatl, they called it a womera. Basically the same device, it allowed them to throw a spear at a kangaroo faster and further thanjust using their arm.

The key to bungee launches is to move the hook well ahead of the cg, like 2-3 inches... Then when you let go, dont point it up at the sky.. Point it directly ahead.. Dont touch the elevator.. It will climb all by itself.. If you try and pitch up, it will loop or stall hard on the winch.. If the cg is too close to the neutral point, it will drag its nose in the dirt.. Oh and at least 50% expo on the elevator...

Great video. I'm thinking about getting into paramotoring so I've been reading and watching videos about it a good bit. Initially I was thinking I could just do my due diligence researching and get up there without training but after watching this it seems like it's really worth it and rewarding to take a training course. I've had a similar idea rattling around in my head for a few years. I think you can solve all your problems by having the atlatl attach point ahead of the cg.

Very interesting project, great experiments and story. DLG's typically have 3 portions the flaperons can be: launch, thermal and cruise. This works because the flap positions change the centre of lift (for/aftward) along the wing cord (which works like making a small tweet to the C/G portion) This however flaperons require a conventional tail design as doesn't work on a flying wing design.

What if the atlatl grabbed the plane at the CG point rather than the rear end?? That ought to eliminate the sudden down force at the end of the launch stroke. Using Hi-Starts or winches on our gliders, the attachment point was ALWAYS at or very near the cg.

Building and trimming a model glider is a bit harder than expected eh? You would be better off buying a glider that works and adapting the atlatl to it. Also I don't think a tail launch is the best idea. If your atlatl used the wing peg to launch a working glider, you could compare techniques. This was a total fail.

Need to think along the lines of a trebuchet mechanism on your atlatl arm. This would greatly reduce the angular loads and increase the intended velocity. Let's see what you can do with this?

The incidence of the stab is easy: it must be parallel to the direction of flight. For the wing, it will vary from 0º to some positive degrees. My Funglider (great little all purpose model) has a full moving stab too.

Why build a new design by guesswork, when there are hundreds of proven old timer designs for free?

I launch mine vertically and landing them horizontally..no parachute. No pvc..paper or plastic tubes instead.

Your Rc gear is way too heavy and the glider is gliding way too fast.

I just bought gear but haven't flown or trained. 1 thing i dont like about paramotor training is the cost. I think its like $300 to take a motorcycle class.

A rubber band gun launcher should be investigated. Need a hook built into the carbon fiber tube just behind the CG

I had a similar idea when throwing the dogs ball using the throwstick. I wanted to launch a glider using a throwstick but... I would attach the stick on a hook at the cg and not at the tail.

Hello 👋, liked your experiment. You might want to double the length of your throwing arm. Put a hinge in the middle of the arm that will stop whin it is strate. Move the ancer point ahead of cg & center of pressure. Just a thought wish you luck.

Didn't anyone ever tell you to always hold the model AT THE CG point when you toss it. The force, when applied applied to the tail, will always cause the rear end to try to trade places with the front end. Accelerating Force applied at the CG will be more effective. Think of it like this; You are standing on the middle of a skateboard and someone shoves you with force -you and the board both accellerate at the same speed. Now, have someone violently shove the BACK of the skateboard (and not you) and the board will shoot out from under you. This why your plane goes wonky when you are swatting it with the atlatl.

Dah....range is a function of sensitivity not # of receivers. More receivers means you can catch signals in different orientations easily...

this is similar to an idea i had to launch a glider with a sling so you have a string attached to the nose of the glider with a little hook and swing it over arm and launch it like how a trebuchet would idk if it would work but itd be cool to try it

Really enjoyed the LED installation. I often wondered why they had didn't have a LED installed to let you know that your charger was working correctly or simply that your batteries were being recharged without question . But anyway well done

the stability is also iffy because the contact and pivot point is at the very end of the plane. If the launching / pivot / connection spot was at the CG, maybe that is more controllable. No?

A spear is not only flexible but it has also no wings that would gave him lift at the front. The lift of the wings and the downwards kick at the end at release of the atlatl make the glider almost stall. You should try to make a bolt at CG and the atlatl with a kind of fork where the bolt fits into. when at release at almost vertical position the fork must be open to give it free..

Great video, calm and clear instructions covering exactly whats needed. I had a little carbon fibre stock and used a little ca glue to fix it. The Black cf made it look almost factory.... nah maybe not but it works 😉. Anyway, it saved a radio from the scrap pile.

Why not move the launcher forward ?

the main difference in these brands is going to be in their parts, assembly and "quality control " process......both may have similar general range, however the odds of an Orange Rx leaving the factory and sold to the consumer with some type of electronic defect is going to be much higher than a Spektrum ..........

To keep my spinner in place I put a tiny dab of blue RTV in the hole and put it back, checked for alignment and left it to dry for 24 hours. RTV is easily removed yet strong enough to hold the spinner on. It wouldn't work for structural repairs. Medium cyanoacrylate would work and can be removed (softened ) by repeated applications of acetone. (Finger nail polish remover) The acetone may eat the plastic film, so you're on your own trying that. I haven't had to use it yet.

NO HOT GLUE.. Please people watch a couple other videos first.. and dont forget Horizon Hobby has live product support.. always ask them what to use for adhesive.. its free to ask. But could cost you hundreds if you use what some random dude on UA-cam put. That's probably why he didn't fly it after the repair. Yeah common sense. No hot glue. Some people like to put bad information on purpose. This guy is cool he just doesn't know any better. Also 5 minute epoxy... bad idea....!! Good luck scraping that off for another repair.
